Family, neighbours, your GP surgery, your water company's emergency number, your energy supplier, and your local radio station's frequency.

Our plan

For example, a neighbour or relative who lives alone.
The torch, the emergency kit, the fuse box, the water stopcock and the gas meter.
Who takes what, and any equipment that needs power.

When it happens

Staying at home

Go in, stay in, tune in. Get indoors, stay there, and listen to local radio or check official updates. If your home becomes unsafe, or the emergency services tell you to leave, follow their instructions.

In a power cut

  • Use a torch rather than candles.
  • Check whether it's just your home or the whole street, then call 105 to report it or get updates (03457 643643 in Northern Ireland).
  • Keep the fridge and freezer closed.
  • Keep warm, and check on neighbours who might need help.
  • Never use a barbecue, camping stove or generator indoors. The fumes contain carbon monoxide, which can kill.
